Each computing platform has its advantages and disadvantages. Desktops are more reliable because they are stationary and less subject to wear and tear from movement from the computer user being mobile. Laptops have the advantage of mobility and are therefore useful for that purpose however since the hardware is placed in a smaller package and uses Liquid Crystal Display, the LCD screen can stop displaying properly after a year or two of use. With laptops you also have the security aspect. Laptops are subject to theft from criminals if they are not constantly watched. They can be stolen from places such as the interior of a car, libraries and bookstores. The data on them can be used for identity theft and therefore can be liability for business and individuals.
Laptops however have the advantage of mobility as it would be impractical to say the least to have to lug around a desktop to meetings.
In terms of cost, laptops are more expensive when it comes to the same or similar computing power and memory.
In summary the decision is an individual one based on what makes sense for the purposes that the individual or business is going to use mostly.
